June 2001 Board of Directors Meeting

Lion Line

The Nevada Lions Club held its regular Board Meeting in the Duane Stansbury home on 4 June 2001. The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by First Vice President Angelo Stefani who acted as chairman, with the following members in attendance:

Odin Christian Lynn Harris Loren Heckathorne
Dean Howell Charles Lloyd Paul Malsom
LaNair Niblock Jim Perkins Jerry Radke
Susan Radke Dick Smith Duane Stansbury
Jan Whaley John Wheelock

The minutes of the 7 May 2001 board meeting were read and approved. The treasurer's balance was $5,721.25. The secretary had no bills to present.

Lion Secretary Jerry reported ISU paid us $331.50 for 39 hours of parking lot duty during dorm move-out from 2 to 5 May 2001. Assignment sheets for ISU cafeteria duty 8 to 10 June were handed out. We have two six-member crews; one working two breakfast shifts and the other working two dinner shifts. District Governor Jan reported that the Nevada Lions will have a food stand in the Community Building at the Fair Grounds for Lincoln Highway Days. This will replace our annual Chicken BBQ. She also reported that seven Nevada Lions worked 20 hours for the "Opening Eyes" program at the Special Olympics in Ames on 24 and 25 May.

It was decided that the secretary should bill members for four meals at $6.50 each in the next quarter instead of six since we are canceling our last meeting in July and first meeting in August. Family night will be 11 July in the Oriole Ridge shelter at Hickory Grove Park. We also are invited to Lion Jim Perkins' birthday party which will be 4 August at Brad Fullmer's home starting at 4 pm. Deceased Lion Everett Carman's "Lion of the Year" plaque and "Warren Coleman Award" will be presented to his widow, Jean, at her home on 27 June following our regular meeting.

Reports on the State Lions Convention that was held in Des Moines 1-3 June were given by DG Jan and Lion Jerry. There was a discussion on our new caterer, Margaret Crane. Everyone seemed pleased with the meal and the use of real dishes and utensils. However, we need to make sure all dishes are returned at the end of the meal so Margaret can remove them.

There were many items of new business. First VP Angelo read the draft of a letter he prepared to send to the Gates Hall Board requesting special rates for our Lions Club. Rotary and Kiwanis are doing the same. A small girl from Nevada is in the University of Iowa Hospital Burn Unit. We were asked to provide $143 so the girl could receive a talking Spinoza Bear. Lion Dick is going to check to see if the girl's family would like her to have the bear or if they would rather have something else. Lion Jim Perkins is heading up the Tractor Ride fund raiser which will be from noon to 3 pm on 27 June. We will serve BBQ Beef from Burkes. Other items on the menu and prices will be determined by the committee but should fall in the range of $3.50 to $5.

The annual RAGBRAI bicycle event will be passing south of Nevada on 25 July. Lion Dean has arranged for a grassy spot on Highway 210 where we can set up a refreshment stand. Lions Dean and Nib (Niblock) will spearhead the event. Each Lion will be asked to donate a fresh watermelon.

Lion President Joel Halverson and Secretary Jerry Radke met as the Awards Committee and recommended that District Governor Jan Whaley be presented with the "Lion of the Year" award and Jean Bodensteiner be presented with the "Volunteer of the Year" award. Everyone agreed with the selections. Lion Charles moved to dedicate $1200 to Nevada Parks and Recreation to be used for playground equipment. This will be paid at a later date. The secretary was directed to write a letter to Lion Larry Myers asking him his intentions regarding his non-attendance and non-payment of dues. He will also contact Lion Brett Anderson concerning attendance and payment of meals.

District Governor Jan will not be able to install officers on 27 June. She will e-mail VDG Tim Wilson to see if he can do it. President Elect Angelo is working on committee assignments. He is going to stress membership and club publicity. Lion Susan announced a Zone Meeting on 10 June and Officer Training on 18 June.

The 2 July board meeting will be at Lion Dean Howell's home. Lion Charles moved to adjourn, seconded by Lion Lynn, and we adjourned at 8:35 pm.

Secretary Jerry K. Radke
