March 2003 Board of Directors Meeting

Lion Line

The Nevada Lions Club held its regular Board Meeting in the Nevada Chamber of Commerce Board Room on 3 March 2003. The meeting was called to order at 7:10 pm by President Jim Perkins who acted as chairman with the following members in attendance:

Jean Bodensteiner Dwight Bonham Loren Heckathorne
Charles Lloyd LaNair Niblock Jerry Radke
Susan Radke Dick Smith Duane Stansbury

Secretary Jerry Radke read the minutes from the 10 February 2003 board meeting. Lion Dwight moved to approve the minutes, seconded by Lion Susan, and carried.

The treasurer's check book balance was $5976.75. The following bill was presented: District 9x7 for District and State Dues for 32 members = $252. Lion Dick moved to pay the bills, seconded by Lion Susan, and carried.

For old business, the Membership Committee's recommendations from their last meeting were discussed. Lion Charles moved that a Lions sponsoring a new Lion be given four free meals and that visiting potential new members be allowed up to two free meals. Seconded by Lion Loren and passed. Publicity was discussed. Lion Susan volunteered to take on the position of Publicity Chair if she were relieved of her Tail Twister duties. Lion Charles so moved, seconded by Lion Duane, and the motion carried. Lion Susan is in the process of ordering the Gentle Lion costume as approved at our last board meeting.

There was a report on the last Zone Meeting held in Story City on 27 February 2003. Lions Jean, LaNair, Susan, and Jerry attended. There was a special session on tail twisting. Our club was reminded that we have yet to donate to the Iowa Lions Foundation.

Lion Jerry reported that last year we donated $50 to the Lions Clubs International Foundation, $350 to the Iowa Lions Foundation, $100 to Leader Dog, and $200 to Diabetes Awareness. Lion President Jim suggested that we also give $100 to the North Central Correctional Facility in Rockwell City for their Leader Dog Puppy program. Lion Duane moved that we donate $700 as we did last year and that we also donate $100 to the North Central Correctional Facility. The motion was seconded by Lion Charles and passed on a 7 to 2 vote.

Lion Jean reported that there is a Nevada school student who would be interested in attending Camp Hertko Hollow for Diabetic Children at Boone. The cost would be $475 for a week. The board felt that we could pick up part of the cost - perhaps $200. Lion Jean will get feedback from the student regarding interest in attending the camp.

Lion Jerry reported that Nevada Parks and Recreation is again asking for youth baseball sponsors at $170. Lion Charles moved to sponsor a team, seconded by Lion LaNair, and passed. It was noted that we will not provide caps for the team this year.

Pancake Day plans are underway. Some Lions are finding it more difficult to pre-sell tickets for our Sunday event.

New Lion Dwight has agreed to become our Program Chair for the remainder of the year starting in April. Lion President Jim has arranged for Bill Burke to be our program on 12 March. The Nominating Committee needs to meet to prepare a slate for the April elections. Lion Jerry reported that we need to be thinking about our participation in the Nevada Sesquicentennial celebrations this summer. Perhaps we could hold a Coming to Your Senses screening or request the Glaucoma Bus.

Lion LaNair volunteered to have the next board meeting at the Niblock home on 7 April 2003. Lion Duane moved to adjourn, seconded by Lion Charles, and we adjourned at 8:15 pm.

Secretary Jerry K. Radke
