Lion Line

Windsor Manor, Wednesday Evening, May 14, 2014 -- Loren Heckathorne

At the regular meeting, Bob Hunter and Jayson Kingsbury reported that the scholarship winners are nearly selected. They will finish the selection after the meeting tonight. John Beals reported on Pancake financials. We served 171 people and grossed $1332.20, while expenses were $727, leaving a profit of $605.20. Charlene reported on membership. Saturday, May 17 is the membership event, which will be held in the Chamber of Commerce Office from 10 to 11:30 am. Cake and ice cream will be served. Bob Hunter reported on Paper Recycling. Another load of paper will go out next week or 2 weeks from now. Willy Morfitt reported on glasses recycling. We now have 10 boxes for collecting eyeglasses and hearing aids. He also reported that he picked up 80 pairs of glasses and 1 hearing aid today.

John Beals was in charge of the program, which were Paula and Phil Page as well as Kris Corbin from the Nevada Community Historical Society. They talked about the house and other buildings at Evergreen Lane. The Historical Society is raising money for both restoration and continued maintenance.

The Board meeting was convened after the program. The Nevada Lions Club held its regular Board of Directors meeting, May 14, 2014, in the Windsor Manor dining room. President Jerry Radke called the meeting to order at 7:55 pm and acted as Chairman, with the following members present:

Secretary Loren Heckathorne read Minutes from the April 9 Board Meeting. Motion was made by Bob Hunter, Second by everybody to approve the Minutes as read. Motion passed.

Treasurer John Beals presented the Financial Report. Susan Radke motioned and Charlene Jarboe Seconded approval of the Financial Report. Motion passed. During the Financial Report, John noted that the $100 check for the Puppy Program is still outstanding and may have been lost.

Bills of Account included: Paper Recycling sacks $28.31 to Bob Hunter; Pancake mix $48.86 to Charlene Jarboe; Pancake supplies of $144.79 to Fareway after returns; advertising of $65 to Nevada Journal; Gates Hall rent of $440. Steve Jordening made the motion, Second by Jayson Kingsbury to pay the bills. Motion passed.

There was discussion of Wes Ebert's funeral. President Jerry Radke thanked Secretary Heckathorne for reading the Lions tribute at the funeral. Also, several potential new members were discussed at this time.

The ISU Dining fundraiser (Odyssey of the Mind) was discussed and sign-up passed. We need 4 workers plus the leader for a total of 5 people for each breakfast. The hours were given as 6:00 to 10:00 am, but we may not actually start to serve until 6:30 am. Carpool will leave from the Methodist Church parking lot at 5:30 am. Charlene Jarboe is the leader and will attend the training session on May 21. While there, she will also obtain information on the ISU Dining opportunities this fall.

Giving a $25 gift in honor of departed Lions was brought up from last month. Willy Morfitt motioned and Steve Jordening Seconded that $25 be given to the families of Dick Smith and Wes Ebert. Motion passed.

The State Convention is in Cedar Rapids on June 5 thru 8 and there will be officer training on June 7. There is a form in the Iowa Lion, but no one was certain that they could go. President Radke read a thank-you from LCIF for our $50 contribution.

We next discussed serving sweet corn and bologna at the Iowa Lions Youth Exchange. It will be at the Boy Scout Camp this year. Motion by Steve Jordening, 2nd by Charlene was made to get beef bologna instead of pork. Motion passed. It was also noted that Lions can host an exchange student, which is for one week.

We paid Gates Hall $440 in rent for the Pancake fundraiser. Can we hold this somewhere else to reduce the cost? The members are to think about other possible places.

The Habitat for Humanity newsletter was passed around. Also, the 4th of July parade was mentioned. We need to find a new driver, since Dick Smith has been the driver.

Motion to Adjourn was made by Bob Hunter and we adjourned at 8:49 pm.
