June 2000 Board of Directors Meeting

Lion Line

The Nevada Lions Club held its regular Board Meeting in the Steve Jordening home on 5 June 2000. The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by President Loren Heckathorne who acted as chairman, with the following board members in attendance:

The minutes of the 1 May 2000 board meeting were read and approved. The treasurer's balance was $3883.41. The treasurer's report was approved.

The secretary presented the following bills: (1) Lions Clubs International (dues for new member Jean Bodensteiner) = $32.08, (2) Wall to Wall Gallery & Frames (engraving) = $7.79, (3) Loren Heckathorne for State Convention Expenses = $100.00, (4) Jerry Radke for State Convention Expenses = $34.00, and (5) Susan Radke for State Convention Expenses = $24.00. Lion Steve moved to pay the bills, seconded by Lion Joel. Motion carried.

Lions Charles Lloyd, Dick Smith, and Loren Heckathorne met on 9 May and selected three finalists for the Maliet and three finalists for the McDaniel scholarships. Lion President Loren Heckathorne presented the scholarships at the 28 May Nevada High School Commencement. Alicia Johnson, daughter of Steve and Diane, won the $750 Maliet scholarship and Sarah Spaete, daughter of Roger and Becky, won the McDaniel scholarship. Lion Secretary Jerry will invite the winners and their parents to our regular meeting on 9 August 2000.

Lion President Loren Heckathorne announced that we are sponsoring a youth baseball team again this year. The secretary handed out newsletters with our team's schedule. Lion Secretary Jerry reported that John Lofton, the Nevada 5th grader with glaucoma, received a medical evaluation in Iowa City on 15 May. We have not received a bill as yet. Zone Chair Susan Radke reported on the 30 May Zone Meeting and New Officers Training held at the State Bank in Nevada. The Brass Rail will resume catering our meals in June. ISU has not paid us for parking lot patrol yet.

The Per Mar ISU football fund raiser was discussed. Lion Jim Perkins will prepare a sign-up sheet for our next meeting. Lion Angelo reported that he has ordered 375 chickens for our annual Chicken BBQ. Enlarging the BBQ pit was discussed. Lion Dean moved to give Lion Jim Fenn the authority to buy supplies to enlarge the BBQ pit and canopy. Seconded by Lion Duane and approved. Lion Jim Perkins reported that the Nevada school art teacher is not enthused about the Peace Poster Contest. He will proceed with the Community Resource Center for a contest with awards. Lion Dean moved that we give a $50 savings bond for first place, $15 cash for second place, and $10 cash for third place. Seconded by Lion Lynn and approved.

Lion President Loren read a letter from DG Herman Kopitzke asking for an additional donation to the Iowa Lions Foundation. Lion Jerry suggested that we consider giving $1000 over a period three years in the future so we qualify for a Warren Coleman award. We have given $200 so far this year. Lion Dean moved that we send another $100 to the Iowa Lions Foundation earmarked for the "Coming to your Senses" program. Seconded by Jim Perkins and approved. Lion Steve moved that we add $33 to the donation if we can apply everything we've given this year towards a Warren Coleman award. Lion Susan seconded and the motion carried. Lion Jerry will check to see if this is possible and when we have to designate a recipient.

Lion Jim Fenn volunteered his trailer for the 4th of July parade and John Wheelock volunteered his pickup. Lion Dean will get the candy and Lion Susan will take care of decorating the trailer. We will need riders in the parade. The potential ISU fund raiser for 6-9 July 2000 is on hold until we hear from the university.

Lions Duane and Dean volunteered to organize a supper on 20 July 2000 for the Lions Youth Exchange camp at the 4-H grounds near Madrid, Iowa. Lions Jerry, Susan, Joel, and Jim Perkins indicated that they can help. We will need about a dozen Lions to cook and serve.

Lion Odin Christian will host our next board meeting at his home. It was agreed to hold the meeting at 7 pm on 10 July. Lion Charlie moved that we adjorn. Lion Lynn seconded and we adjourned at 8:36 pm.
