The Nevada Lions Club held its regular Board Meeting in the Lynn Harris home on 1 November 1999. The meeting was called to order at 7:02 p.m. by President Loren Heckathorne who acted as chairman, with the following board members in attendance:
Joel Halverson Lynn Harris Bob Hobson Dean Howell Steve Jordening Charlie Lloyd Jim Perkins Jerry Radke Susan Radke Dick Smith Duane Stansbury Angelo Stefani
The minutes of the 4 October 1999 meeting were read and approved. The treasurer's balance of $3,389.30 was read and approved.
The secretary presented the following bills: (1) City of Nevada for Gates Hall Rent ($144 for 6 meetings and $210 for Chicken BBQ) = $354.00, (2) Lions Clubs International for New Member Brett Anderson = $33.79, and (3) The International Association of Lions Clubs for 3 Lion Magazine subscriptions (Nevada Library and Nevada Schools) = $18.00. Lion Dick moved to pay the bills, seconded by Lion Bob. Motion approved.
Lion President Loren handed out some committee information to various committee members. Lion Jim Perkins reported that he has a meeting on the Peace Poster contest with the teachers on 15 November 1999. Lion Jim also reported that we only had five Lions working at the ISU/Texas game last Saturday. We need at least six to work at the 13 November game. Lion Jim next reported that the scouts do want our trailer and would like to do some service projects with our Lions Club. Lion Jim will attend a scout meeting on 21 November regarding the trailer and service projects. It was suggested that we transfer the trailer to the scouts before the end of the year.
Lion President Loren passed around some information on Choice Magazine Listening. They provide audio tapes for those unable to read magazines and books. They would like us to promote their project by putting notices in our newsletters, web pages, etc. Lion Susan volunteered to write an article for the local papers.
Lion President Loren asked about the status of Sandy Banks and the Video Magnification Unit we are providing for her. We will ask Lion Don Williams to check into this matter.
Lions Club signs in Nevada were discussed. Our sign was taken down when the City of Nevada replaced the welcome signs. Lion Jim will contact the other clubs in Nevada to see what they think about signs in Nevada. Eye glass collection boxes were mentioned. We need to determine if they are still being displayed by the various businesses.
Fund raising for the "Coming to Your Senses" program was discussed. Story City sells pies at Easter. Jan Whaley had earlier suggested selling cook books as a project. No interest was voiced for these types of projects. Jim Perkins will ask Per Mar if they have other events that we could work.
Lion President Loren read a letter from Lion Tom Rittgers. Lion Tom has moved to Ames and resigned from our club effective 25 October 1999. Lion Dean moved and Lion Charlie seconded that we accept his resignation with regrets and that we inform Lion Tom that his dues are paid in full. The motion was approved. Lion Secretary Jerry said that he will send a transfer form for the Ames Evening Club.
Several other items were discussed briefly. These were the Festival of Trees, LCIF and Iowa Lions Foundation donations, the District Governor's newsletter, Chevron awards, and the Colo Lions Music Show scheduled for 6 November. Special Guest (formerly Ladies) Night is being planned by the Tail Twisters for our 10 November meeting. Lion Jerry will ask our caterer to add dessert to our meal for that evening.
Our next board meeting will be Monday, 6 December 1999, at 7 pm in the Dick Smith home. Lion Susan moved that we adjourn, seconded by Lion Dean, and we adjourned at 8:40 pm.
Secretary Jerry K. Radke
